Fort Worth Zoo
With more than a million visitors every year, the Fort Worth Zoo is arguably the most popular attraction in the Dallas/Ft.Worth metroplex. In recent years, the zoo that was founded in 1909 has grown into a nationally-recognized zoological park that’s home to more than 5,000 animals. But numbers alone don’t tell the whole story behind the zoo’s popularity. The zoo has something that few other zoos have — one of the largest collections of reptiles in the U.S. The zoo is the only zoo in the United States where visitors can see all the Great Apes species (chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos), and it’s one of a mere handful of zoos in the world that house three rhino species.
Exhibits include meerkat mounds, Komodo dragons, Asian elephants and white tigers, animals of the African savannah, and the saltwater aquariums filled with coral and marine life from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Another exhibit, Texas Wild!, offers a look at Texas wildlife in their natural habitat, from the Gulf Coast to the West Texas desert.
Among other attractions are a petting zoo, a carousel and a rock climbing wall. Throughout the year, the zoo hosts a number of special events and activities, including company picnics, overnight stays, Saturday classes and Summer Zoo Camp for children.
